Tutorial: How to make and use oil washes

I have been using oil washes for a few years now, here is a tutorial in which I will take you through the process I use for making the oil wash, protecting the model, and applying the wash itself. Plus a few more random thoughts that came to mind as I was talking.... – A blog about Warhammer 40k and the Horus Heresy by four Dads

Running a narrative-style game

So Dad James and I took the Imperial Fists (IF) and Flesh Tearers (FT) to war on Saturday night - a game of 3,250 points each and lasting an eye watering 5 and a half hours - I can tell you, after getting home at 02:30 on Sunday morning and rising to play with the kids at 06:00, I was experiencing a new kind of hangover for me - "I got (War)hammered last night and feel terrible" I was saying to anyone who would listen on Sunday! (not many people were listening! - James)

The Rescue - Mission & Rules - Imperial Fists (Rich) vs Flesh Tearers/Astra Miltarum (James)

The Challenge
The challenge has been thrown down, a night has been arranged and the fluff has been written. Yes on Saturday evening Rich is coming over for beer and toy soldiers to my house to throw down some dice for the first time this year.

As we don't get to play too often (bloomin' kids) we love to have a bit of a story behind our games now that we are out of our 5th Ed. competitive stage. So the planning has been extensive over whatsapp deciding on mission, forces and story line. I thought that it was quite interesting and different and so here it is shared with you all.

It all starts with a map
Firstly as soon as Rich got the ok from his better half the first thing he did was draw a map...
He had this idea in his head about a rescue mission and that because we love playing Zone Mortalis he also wanted to incorporate his realm of battle and Zone Mortalis boards in the game.

Star Dads Interview - Gav Thorpe

Recently Dave met up with the mighty Gav Thorpe at Warhammer World to get an insight into Gav's gaming, designing and writing world and how that fits in with being a father.

You can catch up with Gav on his website at or on twitter: @DennisHampster

We hope that you enjoy the interview as much as Dave did.

If you have any questions that you might want to ask Gav then let us know in the comments and we'll try to oblige.

Hi Gav, thanks again for letting us interview you. It’s a real honour to meet one of the legends of Games Workshop.
So, what sort of games are you playing with your kids at the moment?
“We’re playing kids games at the moment really, memory games. Games like ‘Pizza Pizza’, where you’re trying to match bits of pizza. He got that for his birthday, it’s quite good. He likes games, and we’ve got a lot of them in the house so he’ll quite often just get the pieces out and look at them or be making up his own games with them and ask us to join in. There’s a few components that get found later under the sofa but we never want to tell him not to play with them, we don’t want any negative association with doing that. It’s the same with books really.
I recently dug out some older games, like ‘Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs’, which I played when I was younger, so hopefully when he’s older he might like them. Basically we’re throwing everything at him! Sometimes we’ll take him to The Dice Cup in town too where there’s lots of games for him to take a look at.”

Book Review - Master of Mankind

The Master of Mankind Book Review - Aaron Dembski-Bowden

The Master of Mankind - Aaron Dembski-Bowden

Well I've just finished this and it was everything I hoped it would be, top marks Aaron Demski-Bowden! Beware SPOILERS ahead...

Since the beginning of Games Workshops lore we have seen little of the mystical being, the Emperor. Rightly so I think. I always felt like getting a huge insight into the Big E himself would be like meeting your hero - something you shouldn't do we are told!

Twitter Primarch Deathmatch Final - Leman Russ v Sanguinius

"The day has finally arrived - the final is here!"

"Yes it's a glorious day, the crowds are going absolutely nuts in anticipation for this final. The blood has been cleaned from the arena, the weapons are ready, the squig fighting pre-match entertainment is nearly finished and the grott brothers are about to suspend betting on the big event."

"The fanfares have sounded and here they come......"

"Out first and bringing tears to my eyes is the just splendid, fabulous Sanguinius!!!!"

Twitter Primarch Death Match Semi Final 2 Result

"The combatants walk into the arena brandishing their weapons with fight in their eyes."

"Alpharius and Omegon glance across at each other, almost like they have a plan."

"Leman Russ bares his fangs, scratches his ear and has a quick smell of his behind to check all is ok."

"The gong sounds and they're off. The twins leap forward and so does Russ. Russ is quickest and with no time to react he's got both of the twins heads in his fists and.......well I know that Russ is good at banging heads but that is ridiculous!"

"The twins are down at the wolf lords feet and that was far too easy!"

" Just like Sanguinius, Russ has had a cozy ride into the final and it will be interesting to see just who will triumph."

"Russ strolls from the arena and produces a thin smile as he looks back behind him at the prone form of the twins......That is Russ right? The twins are defeated?........" – A blog about Warhammer 40k and the Horus Heresy by four Dads

Painting a Power Sword With Lightning Effects

I have been desperately trying to get my Flesh Tearers Death Company finished of recent times and finally found some time recently. I left the power sword and power axe until the very last purely because I didn't really know how to paint them.

After much consideration I thought i'd give it a go and try for a lightning look. I did some research online but although I found quite a few tutorials, there weren't really any I liked or that I thought looked good.

After reading many of the techniques I gave it a go myself and here is the finished look:

Even though I am not completely happy with the results here is how I did it...

Twitter Primarch Deathmatch Semi-Final 1 Result

"Sanguinius unfurls his mighty wings and, OUCH! That looks like it hurt! Is that in the rules?"

"Sanguinius has poked Magnus right in the eye with one of those feathers. It's either a stroke of luck or a stroke of genius..."

"Magnus is down! He can't see. He's going to have a real shiner right there."

"Without his eye he's completely defenseless fumbling around on the floor as Sanguinius struts towards him like a peacock..."

"Ooooh that was clinical. I think it's all agreed that Sanguinius is victorious as Magnus' lifeless body materialises back into the warp."
